In 2011 I founded Digital Human Library (dHL) to address the urban and rural gap in education by leveraging digital technologies to broaden the K-12 student experience in ways that connect them with new people, places, and ideas from around the world.
Digital Human Library creates opportunities for K-12 teachers and students to learn with the world through social innovation projects, interactive 1:1 video conferences, engaging live streamed educational programs, and the largest collection of educational virtual tours and virtual reality on the web. dHL is a resource that provides teachers and students with unlimited access to learning partnerships and the field trip experience, anytime, anywhere.
Our connections-based learning approach focuses on building relationships and partnerships between students, teachers, families, libraries, experts, and organizations to support and further learning. By leveraging digital technologies, students explore the curriculum and learn how to question, connect, collaborate and cultivate partnerships with real people in real time, while also developing modern learning skills and global competencies.
Digital Human Library partnerships bring exciting new content, powerful stories, resources, and new technologies into our classroom programs to create learning experiences for students that are engaging, relevant, current, accessible and inclusive. Connections-based learning is about supporting students so they can experience the curriculum through a series of meaningful relationships, with a focus on how this learning will affect their lives now, and in the future, further strengthening relationships within, and between our communities.
Today there are hundreds of Digital Human Library Experts offering free educational programs to help enrich our classroom programs and provide support for teachers. And every month thousands of Canadian teachers are using Digital Human Library to bring the field trip experience into their classrooms. As Digital Human Library continues to grow, and connect more Canadian teachers and students with experts around the world, we hope to inspire other teachers to think differently about how they engage their students with the curriculum.
Geography should not be a barrier to great conversations and meaningful experiences for all students. We believe in using simple and easily available technologies to create global connections for today’s learners. We believe all students should experience the world of learning that exists beyond the walls of the classroom. And we believe that when relationships are strengthened between community partners, educational stakeholders, and students, we are all empowered and supported to be leaders in our own learning.
