What are the chances of snow today?

20150515-124540.jpg

Boyd says it is impossible because it is spring and it only snows in winter.
Maricela says is it impossible because it is spring. Only in spring it rains.
Tia says it is unlikely because it might snow and it might not and in spring it doesn’t snow a lot.
Ryan says it is unlikely because he says he checked the weather network and he said it said it was only going to rain.
Josiah says it is unlikely because it is pretty warm in spring.

Ms. King says it is very unlikely that it will snow because the temperature is too high. It is not impossible because snow can happen in the Spring.

Probability Club

Dear Mrs. McBride & Our Blog Buddies!!

We are learning about the chances of something happening. This is called probability. We have been playing with dice and spinners and popsicle sticks and checking out the weather.

We know it is impossible for:

~ a pig to fly

~ that is will rain pop

~ that Ryan will stay home from school today

~ that superheros are real

~ that it will rain popcorn

It is unlikely for:

~ for the power to go out

~ that it will be a snow day

~ that Brian will buy a new car

It is likely for:

~ for us to come to school tomorrow

~ Ms. King to eat lunch

~ for us to drink water every day

~ for us to have Track & Field next week

It is certain that:

~ that we have to breathe air

~ that we had recess once already today

~ Mrs. Gregus is here

~ everyone has parents even if they don’t live with them

What is the probability of it raining today at your school?

What is the probability of your class going on a class trip?

We hope to hear from you soon!

From,

Ms. King & the Busy Bees

Our math question today is all about the likelihood (chances) of something happening. We have talked about spinners and dice and today we were talking about the chances of our name getting picked next for our turn at calendar.

Here are some of our answers to the chance of our own name getting pulled:

Here are some other conclusions we came to in our discussion:
We learned that the more people join in the less chance you are getting picked.
If there is only one name in the bucket it will be certain.
When your name has already been picked, it is impossible to be picked because your stick is not a choice.
It is equally likely to be picked when there are only two Popsicle sticks in the bucket.
