AMDSBKidsChat Update re: Twitter Rate Limit Exceeded Error

First of all, I would like to thank all of the classes who joined us yesterday! We had an engaging and thought-provoking first chat of the year. We hope to see everyone out next month as we discuss #Empathy. Remember, tag a friend!

On a different note, I received a few emails/ DMs from classes who got locked out of Twitter during our chat with the following error message: Rate Limit Exceeded

After doing some research I have learned that in order to control the use of the Twitter API (the service which provides twitter data for 3rd party Twitter applications such as TweetDeck) Twitter sets a limit on how many times it can be used in an hour. It is important to note that this limit only applies to 3rd party Twitter applications (like TweetDeck). The twitter.com website does not use it’s own API and therefore has no limits.

So what does this mean for you? It means that in order to be able to have all of your students tweeting from the same Twitter account they need to be using the web-based version of Twitter or the app.

Here are some tips to help you avoid receiving that error message:

  • try not to over use the refresh button
  • partner students together to reduce the number of devices with Twitter apps open at one time (both students can still tweet)

I hope this helps. If you have any further questions please leave a comment below.
