Stanford Professor Carol Dweck researches “growth mindset” — the idea that we can grow our brain’s capacity to learn and to solve problems. Research on the “growth mindset” shows that students who believe they can grow their basic abilities have greater motivation and higher achievement than students who believe their abilities are fixed, and that teachers can influence students’ mindsets.
Carol Dweck and her teammates at Mindset Works have conducted research and developed resources to help us cultivate growth mindset in ourselves and others. In Dweck’s TED Talk, she describes two ways to think about a problem that’s slightly too hard for you to solve. Are you not smart enough to solve it … or have you just not solved it yet?
