Today we video conferenced with our friends in Colombia and we learned about some of the ways they celebrate New Year’s Eve. Here are some of the things we learned:
1. They make wishes and put fireworks in a fake man and then light the fireworks. The fireworks then set the fake man on fire and he burns. They do this to celebrate the New Year and make their wishes come true. (Josiah)
2. They stuff whole pigs with all kinds of food and then cook the pigs. Then they eat the food out of the pigs. The stuffed pig is called a Lechona. (Tia)
3. Like us, they spend a lot of time with their families. What is different is that they have parties outside on the beach.
4. Like us they stay up really late until midnight.
Here are some of the ways we celebrate New Year’s Eve:
1. We go skating. They don’t have skating or hockey in Colombia.
2. We play in the snow and go tobogganing. They don’t have snow in Colombia. Today we showed them what tobogganing is and how to do it.
3. We have fun with our families.
4. We go snowmobiling. Today we taught our Colombian friends about snowmobiles and how they work. They had never seen a snowmobile before.
5. We eat lots of treats, appetizers and snacks on New Year’s Eve. None of us have ever had stuffed pig!
6. We play games with our families and watch movies. They don’t play games or watch movies on New Year’s Eve.
