Shhh Listen . . . TLLP Reflection

Every time we meet as a group I am always inspired by the discussions that take place throughout the day. As a group I believe are continuing to develop our growth mindset as we are “always learning”.

Last month I spent a lot of time reflecting on how be a better listener – and by better I mean more patient, reserving what I have to say only after listening to and thinking about a number of different perspectives that have been shared. It is so easy to jump into a conversation, or all over one, because we get excited to share what we know or are able to do. We are proud of the work we do, our accomplishments, and what we have learned. The problem is that group members who are not as outspoken as others (like me) may not feel comfortable sharing, or may feel as though there isn’t space or time for them to share, or, they may feel like their voices aren’t being heard.

It was at our last meeting that I was too caught up in what I thought I knew to really listen to this teacher’s idea the first time (hence the reflection on being a better listener!) When I did listen and she had the opportunity to share her new learning, I was surprised to learn that what I thought I knew was no longer true. She was right – and I was wrong. Despite apologizing for my mistake, I didn’t feel good about myself as a team member.

So what did I learn from all of this? That I need to slow down – listen – think – and respond thoughtfully. It is easy to be reactive, it takes patience and discipline to be responsive.
