Our First Post!

For our first post we wanted to share what we have been learning in grade 2! We made a list.

Math

1. Counting forward and backwards to 100
2. Skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s to 100
3. Doubles Facts

4. Calendar – Days of the Week and Months of the Year
5. Mental Math Strategies – dot plates (number patterns), one more, one less, even and odd numbers, and counting on 3

Language

Reading – When we read a book we are writing in our minds. Reading is thinking! The reading strategies we are focusing on are trying the first sound, stretching out sounds, chunking letters together, and looking for smaller words in bigger words. We are also working on making connections to ourselves, other texts, and the world.

Writing – We have been working on writing jokes. First we learned the questions words: who, what, where, when, why, and how. Some of our favourite jokes are:

Knock, Knock.
Who’s there?
Police.
Police who?
Police stop doing that awful dance. hahaha

Knock, Knock.
Who’s there?
Gorilla.
Gorilla who?
Gorilla me a hamburger. hahaha

And here are a few more . . .

We are so funny!

Social Studies

We have been learning all about different kinds of families. We used the iPads and the app Pic Collage to make family trees. Here is an example of the family tree Gio made:

iPads

Two weeks ago we received 10 iPads that are using every day. This week we made posters about our class rules when using the iPads. These are 2 examples:

Be sure to check back next week!  We have lots more to share!

  1. I see that there has been a lot of learning going on at Stephen Central. WOW! I really enjoyed reading your Knock Knock jokes. How did you learn to create these? I would love to teach my students to make jokes too. Can you share a few more of your favourite jokes with me? I also really like how you made your very own iPad posters about class rules. What app did you use to create your posters? Was it hard to take pictures of real things and put them into your poster? I’m really excited to read your blog next week to find out about all the things you are learning about. My class has a doubles rap too. You should check us out at the Regier Think Tank.
    Cheers!
